Green Tea - Derived from the unfermented leaves of the plant native to mainland southeast Asia, it contains two active groups known as xanthines; which suppress inflammation and irritation and polyphenols compounds known as catechins; which are powerful anti-oxidants. Green tea contains six primary catechin compounds: catechin, gallocatechin, epicatechin, epigallocatechin, epicatechin gallate, and epigallocatechin gallate (also known as EGCG). EGCG is considered to be the most active component in green tea and contains between 25 to 100 times the anti-oxidant power of vitamins C and A. Green tea also contains tannins, which help to reduce puffiness and alkaloids: caffeine, theobromine, and theophylline which provide green tea's stimulant effects.
