Although the first timepieces appear in the records as early as 1853, it was in 1898, when Louis Cartier took over the management of Cartier, that Watchmaking became a distinct part of the world of Cartier. When he presented his friend Alberto Santos Dumont a square wristwatch in 1904, he established Cartier as one of the most influential watchmakers in the world.
